This hand-forged Viking bearded axe brings together everything that makes a Norse axe special: a carbon steel head etched with intricate Celtic knotwork, and a hand-carved wood handle wrapped in a coiled dragon design. It's a real, functional axe with the presence of a museum piece — forged by hand in our Wyoming workshop and built to be held, displayed, and passed down. It's part of our Viking battle axes collection.

We forge this axe by hand — us, Naqash and Younas Minhas — with more than 15 years of combined experience at the bench. The head is shaped and etched individually, and the handle carved by hand, so this is a genuine one-of-a-kind piece rather than a mass-produced replica. Whether you're a collector, a re-enactor, or a lover of Norse history and mythology, it's an axe with real character.

The Bearded Axe Shape

This is a classic bearded axe — the defining Viking design. The lower edge of the head extends downward into a "beard," lengthening the cutting surface while keeping the head light and fast. Historically this shape made the Viking axe both a fearsome weapon and a practical tool, and it lets you choke up on the handle just below the head for finer control. It's the shape most people picture when they think of a real Viking axe.

Celtic Knotwork and Norse Carving

What sets this axe apart is the artwork. The carbon steel head is etched with flowing Celtic knotwork, the interwoven, never-ending lines that symbolize eternity and connection in Norse and Celtic tradition. The handle carries a hand-carved coiled dragon and knotwork band, motifs drawn straight from Viking art. Every mark is done by hand, making each axe unique.

High Carbon Steel Head

The head is forged from high carbon steel 1075, which takes a keen edge and holds up to real use — this is a functional axe, not a soft display casting. Because carbon steel can rust if neglected, wipe the head clean and dry after handling and apply a light coat of oil before storage, much like caring for a carbon steel knife.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a real, functional Viking axe?

Yes. It's hand-forged from high carbon steel with a carved wood handle, built as a real, functional bearded axe rather than a soft display replica. Many owners collect and display it, but it's made to be a genuine axe.

What is a bearded axe?

A bearded axe is an axe whose head has a lower edge that extends downward into a "beard." This lengthens the cutting edge while keeping the head light, and lets you grip just below the head for control. It's the classic Viking axe shape.

What do the Celtic knotwork designs mean?

Celtic and Norse knotwork features interwoven, never-ending lines that traditionally symbolize eternity, connection, and protection. On this axe, the knotwork is etched into the steel head and carved into the handle alongside a coiled dragon motif.

What steel is the axe head made from?

The head is forged from high carbon steel, which takes and holds a keen edge and stands up to real use. Because it's carbon steel, a light coat of oil after handling keeps it rust-free.

How do I care for the axe?

Wipe the head clean and dry after handling and apply a light coat of oil before storage to prevent rust. Keep the handle away from prolonged damp, and the carved wood will last for generations.

Is this axe handmade?

Yes. It's forged, etched, and carved by hand by Naqash and Younas Minhas in Casper, Wyoming. Because each is made individually, no two axes are exactly alike.

Does it make a good gift?

Absolutely. A hand-forged Viking axe is a striking gift for anyone drawn to Norse history, mythology, re-enactment, or the craft of forging, and it displays beautifully.

Can I hang or display this axe?

Yes. With its etched head and carved handle, it makes a bold display piece on a wall or stand, while remaining a fully functional axe you can take in hand.
